Interactive Plans of Study (iPOS)

What is the iPOS?

The Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS) is an agreement between you (the student), the Academic Unit and the Graduate College. Once your iPOS is submitted and approved, it should be used to monitor your progress toward graduation, serve as a reference point to ensure you are registering for the correct courses each semester and is the final point of review before you receive your degree.

Once your iPOS has been approved, should you make any adjustments to your schedule, you will be prompted to return to the iPOS to update your courses accordingly.

We ask that each student submit his or her iPOS by the final day of the semester in which they are admitted.

Your iPOS will become available approximately 90 days prior to the start of your first semester. The Social Work Academic Unit will send out instructions on how and when to complete the iPOS. This information will be sent in the semester in which the iPOS needs to be submitted.

iPOS Management

To manage your iPOS, please navigate to the MSW Resource Center Canvas page. In Module 2: Academic Advising, you will find iPOS tutorial videos and plans of study for your specific program. When submitting your iPOS every semester, please have your plan of study on hand. The advising team will hold monthly iPOS tune-up sessions for quick assistance. Please see the Social Work Spark newsletter on the MSW Resource Center Canvas page for the next tune-up session.

Leave of Absence and Withdrawals

Continuous Enrollment

Once admitted to the MSW program, students are required to be registered in at least 1 graduate credit hour each fall and spring semester during the entirety of their graduate education, including periods in which a student is conducting research, taking comprehensive examinations, completing their internship, etc. In extenuating circumstances where students have missed petition deadlines, students can enroll in SWG 695 - Continuing Registration, which is a placeholder course that maintains a student's continuous enrollment status. Please keep in mind that this course is not an actual course and will need to be paid for out of pocket because it is not covered by financial aid. If you have any questions about enrolling in SWG 695, please contact your academic advisor. If you are not enrolled in any credits during a fall or spring semester, you will break continuous enrollment and will be dismissed from the MSW program.

You can find more information about Continuous Enrollment on page 8 of the Graduate Policies and Procedures handbook (link listed below).

Leave of Absence (LOAs)

Students are given the opportunity of submitting a Leave of Absence (LOA). An LOA must be requested prior to the first day of the semester in which the leave is being requested. The LOA petitions can only be submitted 1 semester at a time.

Before submitting an LOA, we recommend meeting with an advisor to update your iPOS and discuss your schedule when you return.

Below are the steps to submit an LOA request:

  1. Log into your MyASU.
  2. Navigate to the box on the right labeled 'My Programs'. Click 'Social Work (MSW)', then 'iPOS'.
  3. This will open the Interactive Plan of Study (iPOS).
  4. On the left-hand side, click 'Petitions'.
  5. Click the red button 'Add Petition'.
  6. Select the semester you are requesting the LOA for, and provide a short reasoning in the comment box.
  7. Click 'Done', and go to the 'Summary/Submit' tab to officially submit your LOA.

This request will go to the School of Social Work Academic Unit and the Graduate College. A notification will be emailed to the student at each level.

As a reminder, students are required to maintain continuous enrollment in their program. Students who do not register for a Fall or Spring semester without an approved LOA are considered withdrawn from the university under the assumption that they have decided to discontinue their program.

Voluntary Withdrawal

Students can formerly withdraw from the MSW program by submitting a Voluntary Withdrawal form. When completed, please email the form to [email protected].

Below is information to assist you when completing the Voluntary Withdrawal form:

  • Academic Unit: School of Social Work
