The mission of academic advising at ASU is to further the teaching mission of the university by  providing quality, accessible advising to all students.

To better accomodate our Downtown Phoenix Campus and ASU Online students during the peak advising season, we have added extended advising hours. We will now be open (Arizona Time):

8:00A.M.- 5:00P.M. Monday and Friday

8:00A.M.- 6:00P.M. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Peak advising hours will be in effect from Monday, February 18- Friday, March 29, 2019 (Undergraduate Advising) and Monday, February 25- Friday, March 29, 2019 (MSW Advising).

Beginning the week of February 18th, we will begin offering Express Advising sessions for Downtown Phoenix Campus and ASU Online students:

Policies for Express Advising

1. Express Advising consists of 15 minute sessions with an academic advisor on a walk-in, first come, first-served basis. Students may either come into our office (UCENT 800) or call in to be added to express advising list. Please note, students will not be able to select which advisor they see. After the 15 minute mark, students will be asked to schedule an advising appointment if additional time is needed.

2. Express Advising is designed to allow prepared students to quickly visit with an and have their questions answered. For example, a student who has already reviewed their DARS and/or major map, has planned out and brought with them a list of courses they need to take in the upcoming semester may see an advisor to get confirmation their schedule is correct and have any holds removed. New students, students on academic probation or below a 3.0 GPA in their master's program, as well as other students with more complicated situations will need to schedule an advising appointment, at the discretion of the front office staff.

3. You will need your 10-digit ASU ID number, which begins with a 1, when calling or walking in for express advising.

4. Our academic advisors will call a student twice (again, either by phone or in the office) before moving on to the next student. When a voicemail is left, the student will have 5 minutes to call our office back to speak with the advisor. Please note the 15-minute time block begins when your name is called, not when you call back from a missed call. Students calling back after 5 minutes will be added to the end of the express advising sign in sheet.

5. Students choosing a phone express advising session must be near a computer with internet for their advising session.

Advising Appointments for Downtown Phoenix and ASU Online Students

All BSW students in the School of Social Work are required to participate in mandatory advising every semester, including summer sessionsStudents cannot register for classes until they have met with an academic advisor each semester.

During the advising session the student and the academic advisor review the student's progress through the program, discuss course pre-requisites, and develop an academic plan for completion of degree requirements. The advising session is also utilized to inform students of deadlines and to explain the petition process in case a student wants to request a curriculum variance.

In addition to the academic advisors, all BSW students admitted to the professional program are assigned a faculty advisor. The role of the faculty advisor is to provide career guidance, serve as an advocate, and help students problem solve.

To schedule an undergraduate (BSW, BA CASP) advising appointment, please call our Student Services office at (602) 496-0800.
