Global Market

The Global Market is a project developed and created by interns from ASU’s School of Social Work, Office of Global Social Work. The goal of this social entrepreneurship innovative project is to create opportunity for refugees, primarily women to become economically and socially self-sufficient.  The main purpose is on women empowerment through social and cultural integration into local community.  As a first step in this process, the Global Market pop-up store was establish as a platform to accomplish this goal. The collaboration between City of Phoenix, interns from ASU’s School of Social Work, Office of Global Social Work, International Rescue Committee (IRC), and different Ethnic Community Based Organizations (Syrian Sweets, AMWA, RICE) provided opportunity for the Global Market pop-up store to be opened. The Global Market allowed refugee women to: interact, brainstorm on how their talents and skills can be used to develop sellable merchandise, teach them how to market and manage their inventory, help them develop management and marketing skills at the store, and provide a safe culturally competent atmosphere for them to progress in their English communication skills.
