Undergraduate

The BSW program is divided into:  pre-professional program for freshman, sophomore students, or transfer students (who have transferred from other universities or community colleges), and the professional program for juniors and seniors.

Application to the University precedes application to the professional undergraduate social work program and is a separate process.  Students may advance into the professional program in the School of Social Work after completing: a minimum of 56 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 at ASU; ENG 101 and 102 or equivalent (grade of "C" or better); the University math requirement: MAT 142; the following core social work classes with a 2.75 minimum GPA and a minimum grade of "C" in each: SWU 171, 291, 295, 303, 306, 340, 374, 311, and 312; a minimum of 60 hours of experience in human services (completed as part of the course requirements for SWU 291).

  • Students apply for advancement to Field and 400-level coursework prior to October 1st and February 1st. If accepted, and all prerequisites have been met, then students may begin taking courses designated "Major Only" in the following semester.
  • A minimum of 60 hours of experience in human services is required. Voluntary, paid, and/or equivalent family/personal experiences may be acceptable.
  • Any student with a "D" or "E" grade in a core social work course will not be admitted to the professional program.

Students who have a 3.5 GPA in all social work courses and been admitted to the BSW professional program are eligible for the BSW Honors Program.  Students must also be admitted to the Barrett Honors College. Students can obtain information to apply by calling (480) 965-2359 or can apply online. The Honors College reviews applications on November 1st, and the 15th of each month thereafter. Minimum GPA eligibility ranges from 3.25 to 3.40 depending on the number of credit hours the applicant has.  Honors college requirements include a minimum of 6 credit hours which includes a thesis. In addition, the student will take at least 18 credit hours of graduate social work courses in lieu of equivalent undergraduate courses.
