Welcome to the Ph.D. program at the School of Social Work.

Welcome to our Ph.D. program website! The ASU School of Social Work doctoral program is designed to prepare aspiring scholars for academic careers. The program is characterized by a collaborative community of social work scholars committed to helping students become tomorrow’s leaders. Our school is set in the scenic, culturally diverse southwest in one of the largest metropolitan areas of the nation and provides a warm, welcoming, and stimulating environment. It is a great place to begin a unique and meaningful career as a scholar who makes a difference.

Our doctoral program provides an individualized program of study that seeks to nurture and build students’ curiosity and creativity in pursuit of their intellectual passions. We offer an inter-disciplinary curriculum which gives students a unique degree of intimacy and breadth of choice. A core set of foundational classes are taught by world-class social work scholars. These small classes are supplemented by classes drawn from other graduate programs across Arizona State University—ranked by US News as the most innovative research university in the nation. To help students get the most out of these educational opportunities, we offer flexible 5-year funding packages. This funding allows students to focus on advanced interdisciplinary study that equips them with the skills needed to succeed in academia.

Our doctoral program is one of only a few programs across the country to offer courses and practica in both research and teaching. Our faculty is one of the most diverse in the nation and, according to one recent study, the most widely published in core social work journals. Ph.D. students have the opportunity to work closely on research projects with faculty mentors which provides a forum for professional development and academic socialization. Accordingly, our students regularly publish in professional journals, present at national conferences, and obtain external funding. As a result, students enter the academic job market with highly competitive track records. In short, we are committed to helping our students learn how to publish, present, and prepare for success on the job market.
